His last victory came at Doncaster in early June, which was four months ago, so he's been without a win for a stretch, but his recent form shows he's still getting competitive finishes. Trainer Paul Midgley has identified something important: Novello Lad is a bit too keen early in his races, wanting to go faster than he should. The solution has been to let other horses set the pace and let him settle in behind, then use his stamina to come through in the final furlong. It's a precise way of running him, and it worked beautifully for him at Pontefract just before his last race. When David Nolan rides him—his most regular jockey—they win roughly one in five races together, a win rate well above his overall record. That partnership works. At his typical level, Class 5 racing, life is harder, with just one win from 11 attempts.
