That said, the recent form does show something worth noting. The last six results read 7th, 8th, 6th, 4th, 4th, 5th — and while none of those are wins, the direction of travel is upward. Those back-to-back fourth-place finishes are the closest Night Emperor has come to a first career placing, and it raced again just yesterday, which suggests Tina Jackson's team still believe there is something to work with.
Jackson herself has had a productive season, with nine winners sent out from her yard — so she clearly knows how to get a horse to the line first. Night Emperor just hasn't been the one to deliver it yet. Most of its races have come at Class 4 level, which is solidly mid-tier racing, and it has gone winless from three attempts there. The question is whether a drop in grade might finally unlock that first breakthrough, or whether the horse simply needs more time to find its feet.
At four years old, there is still time. But ten races without a win or a place is a long wait, and the clock is slowly ticking.
