That win at Nottingham, combined with a first career success at Haydock Park just a few months earlier in the summer of 2022, showed what this horse can do when everything clicks. The problem is that everything hasn't clicked in over two years — the last victory came at Brighton in June 2024, and Night Bear has gone six races without winning since.

The most interesting number in this horse's record is 3 wins from just 7 races on fast, dry ground — that's a 43% win rate, which is a remarkable figure by any measure. In that specific condition, Night Bear transforms from a horse that wins roughly once every twelve attempts into one that wins nearly half the time. The catch, of course, is that British summers don't always cooperate, and dry ground isn't always available. The preferred trip of a mile and three to a mile and four furlongs suits a horse with genuine stamina, and that combination of distance and conditions is clearly where the stars align.

Night Bear is trained by Tony Carroll at Cropthorne in Worcestershire, a yard that has sent out 136 winners this season — a productive operation that clearly knows how to place its horses. The regular jockey partnership with Jack Doughty, however, hasn't produced a win from 10 races together, which is a curious blank in an otherwise varied record. The horse raced just one day ago and is clearly still in full training, which at nine years old is a testament to durability if nothing else.
