Mr Rumbalicious

The Cartmel connection is worth noting. James Moffatt, who trains Mr Rumbalicious, is based right there in Cumbria — and Cartmel is one of British racing's most characterful little tracks, a tight, undulating loop that suits horses who know it well and trainers who understand its quirks. Moffatt's yard has sent out 11 winners this season, so this is a functioning, active operation, not a one-horse outpost. When Mr Rumbalicious won there in August 2023, it had the feel of a horse and trainer in perfect alignment.

Where Mr Rumbalicious genuinely comes alive is on normal ground — not too wet, not too firm, just standard racing conditions. On that surface, he has won 2 from 6 races, which works out to winning roughly 1 in every 3, a completely different animal to the horse who has managed just 1 win from 13 races at Class 5 level. That Class 5 record — the entry-level tier of British racing — is modest, but it tells you where he competes: honest, workmanlike fields where a good day out still means something.

His recent form reads 7-–-10-8-–-5, the dashes representing races where he didn't finish in the frame at all. There are no fireworks there. But he finished fifth last time before yesterday's run, and with the right ground underfoot and a track he knows, the version of Mr Rumbalicious that wins one in three on a good surface hasn't entirely disappeared. He just hasn't shown up for a while.
