Mountain Road

Callum Shepherd has ridden Mountain Road three times and won twice, a 50 percent win rate that stands out sharply against the horse's overall form. That kind of partnership matters. Shepherd clearly knows what this horse wants, and Mountain Road responds. Trainer Jim Goldie, based at Uplawmoor in Lanarkshire, has built a productive yard — 88 winners this season — and he has found a sweet spot with Mountain Road on normal ground. The horse has won three times from just four races on standard conditions, a 75 percent win rate that is genuinely impressive. It suggests that when the ground is neither too wet nor too fast, Mountain Road is genuinely dangerous.

There's also a course advantage worth noting. Chelmsford has been Mountain Road's hunting ground: three wins from four races there, including a Class 2 victory in November 2022 that marked a peak performance. The horse seems to understand that particular track. His best distance is long — two miles or more — where he has won three from eight races (38 percent), and he most often competes at Class 4 level. That last win came at Thirsk on 31 May, four months ago, so there's a gap in the recent record. His last six races show a 10th place followed by two placings, a couple of low finishes, and a third, which suggests he has been struggling to recapture that form. Still, he raced just a day ago and remains active. Mountain Road is a horse with clear preferences — Callum Shepherd in the saddle, normal ground underfoot, and preferably at Chelmsford — and when those conditions align, he can genuinely threaten.
