What makes Mitbaahy interesting now is not that he has been winning lately—he has not won in his last six races and was last seen finishing 16th just a day ago—but that his talent is genuine and his bad performances often have explanations behind them. Trainer Charles Hills, based at Lambourn, has observed that draws and ground have played a part in some disappointing runs; at Newbury, Chester, Haydock, and Ascot he ran better than the result suggested. On normal, standard ground, Mitbaahy wins roughly 1 in every 3 races (3 wins from 8), a far stronger win rate than his overall record. He does best ridden by David Egan, with whom he has two wins from eight races together. At seven years old and still active, Mitbaahy remains capable of mixing with the best sprinters in the country on his day—it is simply a matter of getting the conditions, the draw, and the distance right.
