His recent form before the layoff read 6-3-6-3-1, which is the sort of up-and-down sequence that reflects a horse still searching for the right conditions rather than a consistent performer. Jockey Alan Johns, who has partnered him in 11 of his 13 races, knows this horse as well as anyone — though their combined win rate of roughly 1 in every 11 races together suggests they've both been waiting for the stars to align.

The question on his return is straightforward: can Tim Vaughan find him a suitable track on suitable ground, and can Mistymal pick up where Hereford left off? He's shown he can do it once.
