Miss Mambo

She is trained by Gay Kelleway, one of the more distinctive figures in British racing — Kelleway was the first woman to ride a winner at Royal Ascot as a jockey, back in 1987, before building a training career of her own. The yard has sent out two winners so far this season, which is a modest return but not nothing. For a young horse coming back from a long break, the key question is simply whether the time off has done her good — at two, horses can change a great deal between runs, and nine months is a long time to fill out and mature.

Miss Mambo arrives back on the scene as something of an unknown quantity. The form book does not offer much to build a case on, but her age means it is genuinely too early to draw conclusions. The next run will tell us far more than the first two ever could.
