Minella Rescue

The horse's story starts at Stratford-on-Avon in July 2023, where it won on debut and left Hanmer openly excited. The trainer described Minella Rescue as "exceptional" afterwards, saying it was everything he'd been told it would be — and the scouts who recommended it had been spot on. That early promise was followed by bigger ambitions, including a run at the Cheltenham Festival, though Hanmer was candid that the famous track simply doesn't suit this horse. Cheltenham's undulating, turning track asks different questions to a flat, galloping circuit, and some horses just never click with it.

Where Minella Rescue does click is Aintree. Last year it finished second in a Grade 1 race there — one of the top races in Britain — and Hanmer has kept that course firmly in his sights. He's spoken openly about training the horse specifically around a return to Aintree, even taking it to Bangor to gallop after racing as part of the preparation. The trainer is also clear about what the horse needs: good, fast ground. A wet, muddy surface brings out the worst in it, and a stop-start season has partly been a story of waiting for the right conditions.

The most recent win came at Uttoxeter in May 2025 — a Class 2 race, meaning one of the better contests in British racing — though that was 13 months ago, and recent form (finishing 8th, well down the field, and a non-completion in between) tells a story of a horse that hasn't rediscovered that level yet. Sean Bowen, who knows this horse as well as anyone, has won 3 of their 9 races together — a win rate of 33%, which is a strong partnership by any measure. The pieces, when they align — Aintree, fast ground, Bowen in the saddle — point to a horse still capable of a big day.
