Minella Double

The bulk of its racing has come in Class 4 company, which sits in the middle of the British racing ladder — not the glamour end, but not the bottom either. At that level, Minella Double has won just 1 of its 9 races, an 11% win rate. To put that plainly, it has done the job once in nine attempts at its most common level. Its first career win came at Hexham in October 2023, and its second and most recent came at Worcester in August 2024 — now 20 months ago, with no winner's enclosure visit in the six races since.

That sequence tells a story. The recent form figures show a five at the back end of last season, then two blanks, then a win and a second, then another blank. In other words, there were encouraging signs in the middle of that run — back-to-back good results — but it has not been able to build on them. After a short break of 37 days, trainer Rob Summers will be hoping a freshened-up Minella Double can find that form again. Summers has sent out two winners this season, so the yard is ticking over, even if it is not among the highest-volume operations in the country.

At 8 years old, Minella Double is not a young horse with everything ahead of it. Most horses at this age have found their level, and the evidence here points to a capable, competitive animal that occasionally puts it all together — but one you would need to catch on the right day, in the right conditions, against the right rivals. Supporters will point to those two wins as proof it can do it; sceptics will point to the 20-month gap since the last one. Both are fair observations.
