Milford

The one bright moment came at Hamilton Park on 29 May 2024, and it was bright enough to mean something. Jockey Clifford Lee described it afterwards as a professional performance — Milford travelled smoothly, jumped cleanly from the gates, and won in a way that suggested there might be more to come. Trainer Julie Camacho was clearly excited. She drew a direct comparison to Quiet Reflection, a horse she trained who went on to win the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot — one of the biggest sprints in Britain. That is not a name you drop lightly, and it tells you just how much that Hamilton win impressed her.

The problem is that was 26 months ago, and Milford has not won since. Camacho's yard at Norton in North Yorkshire has been in fine form this season — 46 winners sent out, which is a healthy operation by any measure — but Milford himself has not contributed to that tally. He has tried seven times at Class 2 level, the upper end of British racing, and has yet to win at that grade. That is not necessarily a disgrace, but it does suggest the gap between his Hamilton debut and the standard required at the top end has proved harder to close than the early promise implied. He raced just yesterday, so he is very much still in training and still being given chances. Whether the horse that won so impressively at Hamilton is still in there somewhere is the question Julie Camacho is presumably still trying to answer.
