Miletus

What marks Miletus out is his clear sweet spot. Over seven furlongs to a mile, he has won one of six races — a seventeen percent win rate at that distance, which stands in sharp contrast to his overall record. The gap between his best distance and his worst is dramatic: he has never won in seven attempts at Class 4 level, the mid-range tier where most of his outings have come. This suggests he is a horse who runs best either at smaller tracks or against slightly easier opposition, or ideally both.

His recent form is speckled rather than smooth. In his last six races he has finished fifth, fifth, first, third, sixth and second — the win came three races ago, suggesting he is not a machine but a horse who has good days and ordinary ones. Keane has clearly admired him, believing a step up in trip would suit him and noting that his pedigree — out of a mare by Galileo, a legendary sire — promised more than raw numbers might indicate. Whether Miletus delivers on that promise depends on finding the right races: smaller fields, friendlier company, and the distances where his record already speaks for itself.
