The trouble is, that Hamilton Park success now sits 31 months in the past, and the horse hasn't been able to recapture that form since. In its last six races, the best it has managed is a second place — everything else has been mid-pack or worse, finishing as far back as twelfth in one run.

Adding another layer of uncertainty is the fact that Midnight Lir hasn't raced in roughly five months. A break of that length can mean many things — a minor setback, a planned rest, or simply a trainer waiting for the right opportunity — but it does mean the horse returns to the track a little unknown. The form has drifted, the last win feels a long time ago, and a lengthy break doesn't make prediction any easier.
