Michaela's Boy

What makes Michaela's Boy worth watching is his partnership with Luke Morris, the jockey who rides him regularly. Morris has ridden him twelve times and won three of those races — a 25 per cent win rate that is significantly better than the horse's overall record. That gap matters. It suggests the horse and rider have found something that works, that Morris understands how to position him in a race and when to ask for the effort. When Morris got into the saddle for a recent win at Lingfield Park, he was able to track the main threat, wait for the right moment, and strike late — the kind of tactical ride that separates an ordinary horse from one that wins races at the right moment for the right price.

Cowell picked up Michaela's Boy from Richard Hughes's yard, and the transformation has been tangible. The trainer has ironed out the quirks that made him difficult to handle early on, turning what was a complicated character into a much stronger, more straightforward competitor. At Lingfield Park, where the horse has won twice from six races, he has become something close to a specialist — a track that clearly suits him. He struggles, however, in top-class races, where he has never won from thirteen attempts at the highest level, but that does not diminish what he has achieved at the level where he is supposed to be winning. For a horse that started his career at Windsor in April 2022, six years old and still competing with purpose, that is a respectable legacy.
