In April 2024, Metal Merchant won the Spring Cup at Newbury — a top race, one of the most prestigious mile handicaps of the British spring season. These are the races that separate the good horses from the merely decent ones, and Metal Merchant rose to the occasion. His trainer at the time, Jack Channon, described it as "a very smart performance" and flagged him as exactly the type for the big mile handicaps — races like the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, which Metal Merchant duly ran in later that season. He didn't win at Ascot but ran well for a long way in one of the most competitive races of the summer. That is not nothing.

He is now trained by Brian Toomey, based in Chalfont St Giles in Buckinghamshire. The yard has sent out 10 winners this season, which suggests it is in decent form. Metal Merchant has not won in his last 6 races, and his recent finishing positions — 9th, 10th, 12th, 20th, 13th, 14th — paint a picture of a horse going through a difficult patch. His most regular jockey, David Probert, has ridden him 9 times for just 1 win together, winning roughly 1 in every 9 of those races. On normal ground, he wins 2 in every 8 races — a 25% win rate that is comfortably his best surface, and notably higher than his overall average.

He is a 6-year-old who raced just yesterday, so the yard are clearly keeping him active. The Spring Cup at Newbury — the very race that made his name — comes round again each spring, and given Toomey's comments about his training, that looks the likely target. The question is whether he can recapture the form that made him one of the most exciting mile handicappers in Britain 27 months ago. He has done it once on the big stage. That counts for a lot.
