The trainer has been campaigning him in the big mile handicaps—Royal Ascot, Newbury, and similar high-quality races where the competition is fierce but the prize money substantial. On normal ground conditions, Metal Merchant shows real class: he has won 2 of his 8 races on standard going, a 25 percent win rate that stands out sharply against his overall record. At the top level, winning just 1 of 11 Class 2 races tells you he is operating at his ceiling, but he belongs there nonetheless.

The concern is his recent form. Metal Merchant has not won in his last six races, finishing mostly in the middle of the field with a best result of fourth place. He raced just yesterday, suggesting Butler still believes there is a race to be won with him this season. David Probert, his most frequent jockey, has won just once from nine rides aboard him, so there is no obvious partnership magic there. For now, Metal Merchant remains a horse of considerable talent who rose to his peak two and a half years ago and is still searching for his way back to the winner's circle at the level where he briefly excelled.
