The recent form is actually more encouraging than the bare record implies. Look at the last six runs and you see a string of 6-2-2-2-5, with three second-place finishes sitting prominently in the middle of that sequence. Three times in recent months Merapi has gone close, been beaten, and come back to do it again. That kind of consistency in defeat can feel frustrating, but it also points to a horse in decent health and form — one that is showing up and performing, even without the breakthrough result.
Merapi competes at Class 5, which is the entry level of British racing — the kind of race designed for horses who are still finding their feet or who operate below the top tier. Winning zero from six at that level is a real concern, because these are supposed to be the most accessible races on the calendar. At some point, the question has to be asked: where does a win come from? That said, trainer Michael Keady's yard in Newmarket has sent out 16 winners already this season, so the operation clearly knows how to get horses to the winner's enclosure. Merapi raced just yesterday, so this is a horse firmly in the middle of its campaign.
Until that first win arrives, Merapi remains an intriguing puzzle — consistent enough to keep finishing placed, but yet to find whatever small advantage it needs to turn a second into a first.
