That is a remarkable level of consistency for a horse that regularly competes at Class 2 level, meaning one of the better grades of race in Britain rather than the soft end of the calendar. At that standard, winning 2 from 6 races (33%) is genuinely respectable.

Matterhorn has shown a particular affinity with Taunton — 2 wins from just 3 visits, which is the kind of record that makes trainers keep coming back. Its first career win came there in March 2023, and it has clearly never forgotten the place. More recently, it won a Class 2 race at Uttoxeter in May 2025, and before that a Class 2 at Stratford-on-Avon in July 2024, which sketches out a horse that travels well and handles different tracks.

The recent form reads –-1-2-9-9-– — two poor runs sandwiched between a win and a place, then a break, then a return to winning. That pattern suggests Matterhorn can go through flat patches but knows how to bounce back when conditions suit. Now returning from a break of roughly three months, the key question is whether it comes back in the same sharp form it showed at Uttoxeter. Given that the Cobden partnership is working at close to 1 in 2, and the Nicholls yard is firing on all cylinders this season, there is every reason to think this horse will be competitive when it reappears.
