Master Zack

The most revealing number in his record is what happens when he's kept to the shortest distances. Over sprints of less than five furlongs, he's won 1 from 4 races — that's a 25% win rate, miles better than his overall record of 1 in every 20. In other words, when he's asked to be quick rather than quick and sustained, he looks like a completely different horse. That's a meaningful pattern, and any smart punter would be paying attention to it.

He competes mainly at Class 6 level, which is the entry level of British racing — the races where horses who haven't found their feet or are chasing a first win tend to gather. There's no shame in it, but it does mean the competition isn't exactly the cream of the crop, which makes his 1-from-17 record at that level (roughly 6%, or 1 in every 17 races) a touch sobering. Still, he's clearly capable of finishing in the mix: four places from 20 races shows he's not just making up the numbers.

He's trained by Martin Dunne out of Newmarket, the heartland of British flat racing, and the yard has been in decent form this season with 20 winners on the board. Master Zack hasn't added to that tally in his last six outings — his recent form reads 7-14-9-3-6, which is patchy to say the least — but he raced just 22 days ago and remains an active part of the string. The team clearly believe there's another win in him somewhere.

The short-sprint angle is the one thread worth pulling. If Martin Dunne finds him a race under five furlongs where the draw and the pace set-up fall kindly, Master Zack has already shown he can win at that trip. He's not a horse you'd build a fortune around, but he's far more interesting than his overall record suggests.
