He once had an entry at Newmarket, skipped it because the ground looked too fast, and missed what might have been a good run. That kind of specific knowledge, built up over years, is exactly how trainers like Easterby — whose yard has sent out 128 winners this season alone — manage horses like this.

The horse himself seems to know when the conditions suit him. Jockey David Allan, who has ridden him 21 times together and won 3 of those (14%), once described how Manila Scouse travels powerfully and finishes strongly when the ground is soft and the track has an uphill finish, like at Chepstow. Another rider, Oliver Stammers, echoed that after a win at Haydock, noting how game and tenacious he is in that final furlong when the ground is heavy underfoot.

What raises an eyebrow is the level he competes at. Class 2 races are among the top races in Britain, and Manila Scouse typically lines up at exactly that level — yet he has won just 1 from 21 attempts there, a 5% win rate. That means he is regularly running against some of the best horses in the country and mostly finishing just behind them. His career earnings of around £74,000 reflect a horse who has been competitive without quite cracking the top tier consistently.

That said, he cracked it recently. He won at Ayr just this week — his most recent race was only yesterday — and his last six runs read 1-6-2-3-7-4. Active, in form, and in his element. For a seven-year-old, he shows no sign of winding down.
