That single win from 21 attempts tells you everything about how competitive that grade is, but it also explains why trainer Tim Easterby, based at Great Habton in North Yorkshire, tends to aim Manila Scouse at tracks and conditions that play to its strengths rather than chase big-race glory. Easterby's yard has sent out 128 winners this season, so Manila Scouse is part of a high-volume operation where finding the right race for each horse matters.

What does suit this horse is wet or muddy ground and a five-furlong trip. In those conditions, it becomes a different proposition. Jockey David Allan, who has ridden it 21 times, has won 3 of those races with the horse — a decent win rate of one win every seven runs when you consider the overall record. The horse's preference for soft ground and shorter distances emerged clearly in the stable's comments: it was entered at Newmarket once, but the trainer decided against running because the ground was advertised as fast and firm, exactly what Manila Scouse does not want. Easterby noted the horse had come back well after time off earlier in its career and responded best to five furlongs with cut in the ground. When those conditions materialise, jockeys report that Manila Scouse travels strongly, gets through the line with real determination, and gives everything in the final furlong.

The frustration for the yard is that Manila Scouse has not won in its last six races, with its most recent victory coming at Ayr three months ago. But with the horse still active and entered regularly, there will be more chances. On the right day, at the right course, in the right weather, this is a horse that knows how to finish the job.
