What makes Manhattan Dandy worth watching, though, is his preference for conditions most horses hate. On very wet and muddy ground, he becomes a different animal entirely — he has won 2 of his 8 races on those surfaces, a 25 per cent win rate that is five times better than his overall form. When the track turns into a bog, this horse finds something extra. He also runs his best races over distances between seven furlongs and a mile, where he has managed 3 wins from 37 attempts. That is not spectacular, but it is the closest he comes to reliability.
His last win came at Leopardstown on 10 April 2024, now more than two and a half years in the past. Since then, he has not found the winner's circle despite 16 races, including a disappointing string of six runs without a single top-three finish until he finally managed third place most recently. At nine years old, with Thomas Coyle's Batterstown yard continuing to race him, Manhattan Dandy remains active but the winning formula has long since dried up. For a horse that thrives in mud, the real test will be whether the weather cooperates before age catches up with him completely.
