What makes her situation interesting is the yard she's coming from. Andrew Balding trains out of Kingsclere in Hampshire, and this season his team has sent out 202 winners — that's not a small operation getting lucky, that's one of the most productive yards in Britain right now. When a trainer is winning at that volume, the horses around them tend to improve with experience and good handling. Malika is very much a work in progress, but she's in exactly the kind of environment where horses find their feet.
She raced just one day ago, so whatever happens next is likely to come soon. At three, there's still time for things to click — plenty of horses take half a season or more before they work out what racing is actually about. Right now Malika is a horse to watch rather than back, but with Balding's record behind her, it would be no great surprise if the results start to shift.
