When this horse lines up at Perth, it is not doing so as a hopeful; it arrives as a proven performer with a record to back it up.

Wet or muddy ground suits Malangen noticeably well. In nine races on soft or heavy conditions, the horse has won twice — that's a 22% win rate, roughly 1 in every 4 or 5 trips out when the ground is testing. That more than doubles the overall career average, and it's a pattern worth remembering as autumn approaches and the weather turns.

The current partnership with jockey Peter Kavanagh is a long-running one — 29 races together — but has produced just 1 win between them, a win rate of around 3%. That's a modest return for a combination with so much shared experience, though it tells you more about the competitive level Malangen operates in than anything else. No wins in the last six outings is a cold streak, but the recent form is competitive — Malangen is finishing in the frame, just not quite getting to the front.
