What makes Mags worth watching, though, is the pattern within the numbers. The horse clearly prefers middle distances between a mile and a quarter and a mile and two furlongs, winning once and placing three times from just five attempts at those trips — a 20% win rate that stands out sharply against the bare statistics. That's the kind of distance preference that could point the way forward, if the trainer has the patience to keep finding races over that range.

The worry, though, is timing. Twenty-two months have passed since that sole win, which means Mags has raced ten times without getting back to the winner's circle. The last six races have yielded only three places, with finishing positions ranging from 13th to 20th in some outings — the sort of inconsistency that suggests the horse may be running out of room at current levels. Ronan Whelan, the horse's most regular pilot with seven rides, has yet to steer a winner aboard Mags, which adds another small cloud over recent form. The window for this horse to prove itself may not be wide. A return to the distances it knows best, and quick, might be the only way forward.
