Many horses take years for the yard — sorry, for their trainer — to find the right conditions. When John O'Shea pitches Maasai Mara at that distance, history suggests it becomes a genuine contender rather than a makeweight.

Most of its racing has come at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle of the British racing pyramid — not the glamour end, but competitive enough that winning takes real ability. At that level, it has won just once from eight races, roughly 1 in 8, which is modest. Its last win came at Catterick Bridge in February 2024, meaning it has now gone 28 months and six consecutive races without getting back to the winner's enclosure. That is a long wait, and the recent form figures — finishing second, then twelfth, fourth, seventh, ninth, and fifth — paint a picture of a horse circling the prize without landing it.

O'Shea's yard at Newham-on-Severn in Gloucestershire has sent out nine winners this season, so there is clearly ability in the string. Maasai Mara raced just yesterday, making this an active campaign rather than a horse being nursed through the season. At six years old it is in its prime, and races at a mile to a mile and a quarter remain on the table. Whether it can end that 28-month drought is the question — but given what it has shown at that distance before, the answer is not obviously no.
