The recent form figures tell a straightforward story: a fourth on its most recent outing before that, a twelfth, then two more fourths and a sixth working back through the record. There is a hint of consistency in those mid-pack finishes, but consistency in the wrong part of the field is cold comfort. Racing just one day ago, Ludus Magnus is clearly an active runner, which at least suggests the yard believes there is something still worth finding.
That yard is Philip Fenton's operation in Carrick-On-Suir, Co Tipperary, and it is worth noting that Fenton has sent out seven winners already this season — so the stable is in decent form overall. When a trainer is winning races regularly but one horse in the yard cannot find the frame, it usually means that horse is simply finding its level, or still waiting for the right conditions to click. Whether Ludus Magnus can eventually break that duck remains the question. For now, it is a horse that keeps turning up without quite delivering.
