Tinkler, who has sent out 37 winners this season from his Langton base, is candid about the puzzle Lord Roxby presents. The horse is keen — too keen, sometimes — and that tendency to pull hard and burn energy early has likely cost him. A run at Newbury that ended in sixth place is a case in point: the horse worked well enough on paper but couldn't quite switch off when it mattered. Getting a horse like this to relax and let his ability do the talking is one of racing's trickier problems, and Tinkler believes the trip — the distance he's been running over — may simply have been wrong.

The bulk of Lord Roxby's career has come at Class 4 level, which sits in the middle tier of British racing, and even there he has won just 1 from 12 races at that grade. His most recent win came at Hamilton Park in May 2025, and in the six races since, he hasn't added to that tally. Regular partner Rowan Scott has been aboard for 15 of his 17 races and shares those 2 wins, giving them a combined win rate of around 1 in 8 together.

What's interesting is where Tinkler wants to go next. He's eyeing a race at York over seven furlongs — a track with genuine prestige — or alternatively Southwell, where the pace of races tends to be relentless from the front, which ironically suits a keen horse better than a steadily-run contest does. A fast-run race means Lord Roxby's energy gets channelled rather than wasted. At a current rating of 81, the target races are competitive but winnable, and at only 4 years old, there's time for the pieces to fall into place. Tinkler clearly thinks there's a better race in this horse — the challenge is finding the right conditions to bring it out.
