Lord Roxby

The Langton yard has been in fine form this season, sending out 37 winners, so the infrastructure is there. The issue, Tinkler believes, is that Lord Roxby has been running at the wrong distance and getting too worked up in the process. He can be keen — racing-speak for a horse that burns through its energy too early — and that has cost him. A recent run at Newbury, where he finished sixth, was respectable enough, but it illustrated the problem. Getting the trip right matters enormously for a horse like this, and Tinkler thinks stepping back to seven furlongs at York is the answer. He's also eyeing Southwell, where the pace of races tends to be strong and relentless, which actually helps horses like Lord Roxby settle into a rhythm rather than fight the bit.

The form figures from his last six races — 5th, 4th, 1st, 13th, 9th, 2nd — are a study in inconsistency, but that win, recorded at York just six weeks ago, is the most recent data point and it matters. He won his first career race at Beverley back in August 2024, and has since been competing mainly at Class 4 level, winning just 1 from 12 at that grade. On normal ground, though, the record improves sharply: 2 wins from 8 races, a 25% win rate. That's a meaningful stat — it suggests he needs conditions in his favour to perform at his best, and wet or dry extremes work against him.

Jockey Rowan Scott has been aboard for 16 of his 21 races and has ridden both wins at that level. That kind of continuity between horse and rider usually matters, and with Tinkler appearing to have a clear plan forming around distance and track, Lord Roxby might be a horse on the verge of making more of that obvious ability.
