Those three place finishes suggest Lord Mayor is not out of its depth entirely; it is capable of running a race, running into the first few finishers, and then not quite getting over the line. The recent form reads 7-3-3-3-9-12, which shows a pattern of occasional competitive runs sandwiched between much harder days. The most recent outing, just a day ago, was a seventh-place finish — a step back from those third-place efforts earlier in the sequence.

Lord Mayor is trained by Andrew Balding at Kingsclere in Hampshire, one of the most successful yards in the country. Balding's operation sent out 202 winners this season alone, a reflection of the quality of horses and horsemanship at the yard. The fact that Lord Mayor is there suggests the trainer still believes in the horse's potential, even without a win yet. That backing matters. The path from this level — competing in Class 5 — often leads nowhere for horses that cannot break through, but Balding rarely gives up on a three-year-old too early. Whether Lord Mayor will find that elusive first victory remains to be seen, but it is still young enough for a breakthrough to happen.
