On normal ground conditions, he transforms into a completely different proposition, winning nearly three races in every ten (6 wins from 21 attempts), compared to his overall average of one in seven. More tellingly still, he is a course specialist at Newton Abbot, where he has won two of his eight races. He won there just two weeks ago on 28 September, which explains why the yard keep bringing him back to the same track. That kind of consistency at one course is the mark of a horse who suits the layout, the surface, or both.

Nick Scholfield's Lambourn yard has given Limerick Leader a productive home, and the horse's recent winning streak suggests the trainer has found a winning formula with him. Craig Nichol has been his regular partner in the saddle, though their partnership has been modest so far — just one win from 19 races together. What matters now is that at nine years old, Limerick Leader is competing near the bottom of the Class 5 ladder and landing winners when the conditions suit him. For a horse who spent most of his career as a bit-part player, that is exactly where he belongs, and his recent hot streak shows he still has plenty left to offer.
