The five-year-old made a winning debut at Lingfield Park in January 2024, and has since built a career record that shows genuine ability mixed with a tendency to run into better horses. That tendency becomes very clear at Class 2 level — some of the highest-quality races in Britain — where Lavender Hill Mob has been tried seven times without a win. It is not unusual for a horse to struggle at that level, but seven attempts with nothing to show is a pattern worth noting. The horse places regularly enough, finishing in the top three in 11 of 26 races, but converting those near-misses at the top level has proven elusive.
Where the profile becomes genuinely interesting is over a trip of one mile and one furlong to one mile and two furlongs. At that distance, the record reads two wins from six races — winning a third of the time, which is a sharp uptick from the overall average and suggests the horse is at its best when given a little room to travel and finish. The last of those wins came at Cheltenham in November 2025, and it was a race that had a story attached. Jockey Sam Twiston-Davies went the wide, outside route despite having gone the shorter, inner path in the previous race — a call that looked questionable in the moment and brilliant in hindsight. Trainer James Owen had been insistent. He was right.
Owen trains out of Newmarket and has had a remarkable season — 205 winners sent out by the yard, a figure that puts him firmly among the busiest and most successful operations in the country. His comments suggest he sees Lavender Hill Mob as a horse with real physical presence and potential, particularly on soft or muddy ground, and that longer-term ambitions include one of the bigger jump racing prizes. The horse raced just one day ago, so whatever comes next is imminent.
The recent form reads 14-6-8-6-1-3, which shows a winner buried in there but a horse that has not hit those heights since. With the right conditions underfoot and the right distance, though, Owen and his team clearly believe there is more to come.
