Trainer David O'Meara, who runs one of the busiest and most productive yards in the north of England — 102 winners this season alone — has been candid about how Lava Stream has outpaced expectations. He admitted after her Goodwood win that she surprised the team with how easily she moved through the race, suggesting she might have hit the front slightly too soon. That is not a complaint — that is the trainer of a horse realising he has something special on his hands. O'Meara has since said openly that the goal is a Group race win, the next step up from where she has already succeeded.

What makes her profile particularly interesting is that she competes almost exclusively at Class 1 level — the very top bracket of British racing — and still wins 1 in every 4 times she runs there. That is a remarkable ratio. Most horses that spend their careers at that level are simply trying to get placed. She has been winning. Her recent form shows a dip — a fifth, sixth, and ninth in her last three runs — but O'Meara has mentioned she picked up a minor injury towards the end of last year, which gives context to that drop-off. She raced just yesterday, so she is firmly in training and active heading into the season.

Her regular jockey is Daniel Tudhope, who has partnered her in five of her 10 races, winning once together. That 1-from-5 record (a 20% win rate) between them might look modest, but given the quality of opposition she faces every time she runs, it tells you more about the company she keeps than any lack of partnership. O'Meara has called her "still lightly raced and a little bit raw," which, for a horse who has already won a Class 1, is either refreshingly honest or quietly thrilling — possibly both.
