The recent form makes for interesting reading — finishing second, third, fourth, fifth, and fifth in its last five outings. That second place is the obvious bright spot, and it shows Kyoto is capable of mixing it with horses that go on to win. The frustrating truth, though, is that being competitive and being a winner are two very different things in racing, and so far the gap between the two hasn't been bridged.
Kyoto is trained by Mike Murphy, based out of Westoning in Bedfordshire. Murphy's yard has sent out 15 winners already this season, which tells you this is an operation that knows how to get a horse to the line first. The fact that Kyoto hasn't joined that tally yet doesn't mean it won't — sometimes a horse just needs the right race, the right day, and the right moment to click. Whether Kyoto can find that remains the question worth watching.
