Kottayam

The recent form makes for difficult reading. A tenth-place finish is the headline from the last few runs, and while there are gaps in the record — races where finishing positions aren't available — the overall picture is of a horse that struggles to land a blow when it matters. It did manage a second place at one point, which shows there is something there, but turning that kind of effort into an actual win has so far proved beyond it.

Jockey Lee Edwards has stuck with the horse through five of its eight races, but that partnership is yet to click in the way both sides would hope — zero wins from five attempts together. That said, loyalty counts for something in racing, and the fact that Edwards keeps coming back suggests there is still belief that the right day could come. Trainer Dave Roberts has had six winners on the board this season from his yard, so he clearly knows how to get a horse to win. The question is whether he can unlock whatever Kottayam needs to finally get there.

At Class 4, Kottayam is competing in the middle tier of British racing — not the glamour end, but not the very bottom either. Five races at that level and nothing to show for it tells its own story. The horse raced just yesterday, so it is very much still an active project, and perhaps that is the most optimistic way to read this profile: the story is not finished yet. For a horse that has placed twice without winning, there is always the chance that one good day, one race that suits perfectly, changes everything. It just has not happened yet.
