Kokanee

Kokanee's form since has been mixed. Over his last six races he's finished ninth, eighth, first, sixth, second, and fifth — results that paint a picture of genuine inconsistency. But there is a pattern worth watching: he runs best over middle distances between one mile three furlongs and one mile four furlongs, where he has won one of five races, roughly a one-in-five win rate. His second and most recent win came at Lingfield Park three months ago, also over that sweet spot of ground. That race was a Class 4 contest — mid-tier racing — and Kokanee has won one of his six Class 4 attempts, suggesting he belongs at this level rather than higher.

The physical picture Dunlop painted is revealing. Kokanee is a big horse by the stallion Kameko, with substantial feet and powerful hindquarters. Dunlop noted he's built for softer, slower ground rather than the hard, fast surfaces that can jar leggy horses. There's an internal comparison too: Dunlop sees him as a junior version of Superposition, one of his own stable's better performers. With thirty-nine winners already sent out by the yard this season, Dunlop's judgment tends to carry weight. Kokanee is ridden most often by Hector Crouch, though that combination hasn't produced a win yet from five attempts. Still active after racing just yesterday, Kokanee remains a horse with something to prove — but the skeleton of ability is there.
