Knebworth

Trained by Richard Hughes at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire — a yard that has sent out 60 winners already this season, which tells you something about the quality of the operation — Knebworth has been one of their more dependable performers over the past couple of years. Hughes himself described him as "a great old warrior," and that feels about right. He has been around, he has done it in different conditions, and he keeps showing up. Most of his races have come at Class 3 level, one step below the very best races in Britain, where he has won 3 from 18. That 17% win rate at that grade is competitive, and it suggests he is placed well — not outclassed, not coasting.

His most recent win came at Wolverhampton in March, and it was done in style. Part-owner Derrick Blake described it as "all very smooth" — jockey Billy Loughnane always believed he'd win, and when Knebworth hit the two-furlong mark, he quickened and pulled away cleanly. That's the kind of win that stays in the memory. Blake mentioned hopes of going to Doncaster for the Lincoln meeting afterwards, which would have represented a significant step up in company. His regular jockey Finley Marsh has ridden him 14 times and won on 4 of those occasions — nearly 1 in every 3 rides together — which is a meaningful partnership at this level.

The ground matters with Knebworth. On normal conditions he has won 5 of just 11 races — that's 45%, which is a striking number — and Hughes has noted that when the ground turns wet and soft, his chances improve further. He is also something of a Chelmsford specialist, winning 2 of his 3 races there, which is exactly the kind of course form that sharp punters circle in their notebooks. He raced just yesterday and remains very much in training, which means there should be more to come from a horse who has clearly not read the script about slowing down with age.
