Kap Boy

Six of those 10 races have produced a win or a placing, which means he has rarely run a bad race. He just does not always find that extra gear to win. His best level appears to be Class 4, where he has won 2 of his 5 races at that level — a genuinely strong 40% win rate, which translates to winning 2 in every 5. That is a horse who knows what he is doing when the conditions suit him.

His most recent win came at Perth in October 2025, and his recent form figures of 9-3-3-1-2-4 tell an interesting story. Reading right to left — so oldest to newest — there is a fourth, then a second, then a win, then two thirds, then a ninth. That ninth-place finish on his most recent run was the one outlier in an otherwise respectable sequence, and he has since had an 88-day break, which suggests Murphy has given him time to reset rather than pressing on regardless. A horse who has been freshened up after a below-par run is often worth watching when he returns.

His regular partner in the saddle is Harry Cobden, who has ridden him in 6 of his 10 races and won once together — that is roughly 1 in every 6, or a 17% win rate. Interestingly, it was Cobden who pulled Kap Boy up on his hurdling debut at Chepstow, fearing the horse had picked up an injury mid-race. He had not — he came back completely sound, having likely just knocked something in running. That debut scare seems not to have left any mark, and Kap Boy came back to win at Chepstow the following October on the same track. A horse who bounces back like that tends to have a good constitution.

The bigger picture with Kap Boy is that hurdles have always been a stepping stone. Murphy and the team have been explicit about it: this is a future chasing horse being handled carefully, and the best is genuinely expected to come.
