What works in Kamaal's favour is youth and time. Two-year-olds are essentially still figuring out what racing is, and plenty of horses that look ordinary at this stage go on to surprise everyone once they mature and find their stride. There's no shame in being a work in progress at this age — the question is simply whether that progress keeps coming.

The horse is trained by Jack Jones at Newmarket, one of the most famous racing towns in the world and home to some of the sport's sharpest yards. Jones has sent out 33 winners this season, which tells you this is a stable that knows how to get a horse ready to perform. Kamaal raced just yesterday and remains active, so whatever comes next is likely not far away. The hope will be that a yard producing winners at that rate can eventually unlock something in this young horse too.
