Most horses have preferences; Justus has something closer to a superpower. When conditions are miserable for everyone else, this horse comes alive. That kind of specificity is genuinely useful if you follow it closely.

The bulk of Justus's career has been spent at Class 4 level, which sits in the mid-range of British racing — not the big occasions at the top, but not the very bottom either. At that level, Justus has been genuinely competitive: 4 wins from 11 races, which is winning more than 1 in every 3. That is a healthy record at its natural grade, and it explains why trainer Micky Hammond, based in Middleham in North Yorkshire, keeps running the horse. Hammond's yard has sent out 31 winners this season, so this is an operation that knows how to place a horse correctly.

The big caveat is time. Justus's last win came at Ripon in April 2024 — over two years ago now — and has not won in six races since. That is a long drought by any measure. The recent form shows a fourth and a second in there, so the ability has not completely evaporated, but converting that into a win has proved elusive. Interestingly, regular partner Richard Kingscote has yet to ride Justus to victory in seven attempts together, which is the kind of stat that quietly nags at you without offering any easy explanation.

Justus raced just yesterday, which means this is a horse in active campaign right now. The combination of proven wet-ground ability, a yard in decent form, and a horse still clearly placing in races suggests the next win is not impossible — it just needs the rain to fall at the right moment.
