After the race he described her as a horse who had "taken a long while to come right" — she'd had several niggling problems that kept her away from racing — but that day at Taunton gave everyone a glimpse of what she might actually be capable of.

Since then, the path has not been straightforward. A run at Cheltenham, one of the most demanding venues in the sport, exposed her lack of experience against tougher company. She also had a wind operation over the summer — a procedure designed to help horses breathe more efficiently at full speed, which is more common than people might think. She hasn't raced in fifteen months since that Taunton win, which in racing terms is a long absence, though the fact that she ran just one day ago means she is very much back in action now.

The honest assessment is that Just A Rose is a horse whose talent has spent most of its time sitting in a box, waiting to be unlocked. When she has been able to race, the gaps between runs tell you this has not been an easy horse to keep sound. But that Taunton performance — the one where the jockey couldn't stop her — is the kind of thing that sticks in a trainer's memory. Nicholls clearly believes she can win again in the right race, on the right day, on wet or soft ground. The patience, at least, appears to have been worth it.
