Judge Frank

Both of his wins came in a tight window: Chepstow in September 2024, then Windsor just thirteen days later. Back-to-back wins like that suggest a horse who found his feet and briefly hit a sweet spot — and the fact that both came on normal ground, where he has won 2 from 10 races (a 20% win rate that dwarfs his overall record), hints strongly at what he needs to show his best. At the level he typically competes at, the lowest tier of British racing, he has also won 2 from 10 races at that grade. In other words, when conditions and company are right, he delivers.

The problem is that nothing has gone right since Windsor. Judge Frank has not won in 21 months, and his last six finishes — 7th, 11th, 7th, 7th, 8th, 8th — paint a picture of a horse running consistently without threatening. His most regular jockey, Rob Hornby, has yet to get the best out of him across five rides together. That is not necessarily a damning stat — partnership takes time — but it is worth noting given how little has clicked lately.

What keeps the yard sending him out is presumably that belief that the formula exists. He raced just one day ago, which speaks to an active campaign and a team that has not given up on him. With 8 winners on the board this season, John & Rhys Flint are not short of confidence. For Judge Frank, the recipe seems straightforward enough: normal ground, a distance between seven furlongs and a mile, and the right level of company. He has proved it works once before. Whether he can find that window again is the question hanging over every run.
