Jakajaro

The arc of Jakajaro's career tells an interesting story. He raced in Ireland early on and competed in some strong races, but this year something has clicked. His win rate across his life sits at around 1 in every 9 races, which is unremarkable, but his recent form suggests he is peaking at just the right time. Ridden most often by Luke McAteer — with whom he has won twice from 13 races together — Jakajaro has spent most of his career competing at top-class level without getting his nose in front. That York victory, however, hinted that age and experience have given him something his younger self lacked: the ability to execute at the highest level. His trainer noted that the horse had talent all along; perhaps he simply needed time to grow into his potential.

What makes Jakajaro's story compelling is the contrast between expectation and reality. Class 2 races — some of the most difficult tests in British racing — have defeated him eight times without a win. Yet he walked into a high-quality race at York and delivered when it mattered. With the Temple Stakes and Royal Ascot in his near future, Jakajaro has a genuine chance to prove that the York victory was no fluke, and that at five years old, he has finally become the horse his the yard always believed he could be.
