Chester is a notoriously tight, almost oval-shaped track that suits certain horses far better than others — winning there is not just about raw ability but about how well a horse handles an unusual environment. The fact that its most recent victory came there is worth noting.

The bulk of its racing has come at Class 4 level — solid, competitive races without being the very top tier of the sport — and it has won 4 of 14 at that grade, which works out at just under 1 in every 3.5 races. That is a perfectly respectable return and suggests it knows how to win when conditions suit. Thirteen places from 22 races also tells you this is a horse that runs honestly and is rarely out of the picture entirely.

The recent form reads 8-4-1-11-7-3 from its last six outings (with 1 being a win), which paints a slightly mixed picture — a victory sandwiched between some moderate efforts. The 11th-place finish stands out as an off day, though every horse has them. The trainer, Jennie Candlish, operating out of Basford in Staffordshire, has sent out 61 winners this season, which suggests the yard is in confident form and horses are running fit and ready. A well-performing yard returning a horse after six months off is a much better sign than a struggling one doing the same.

Six months is a meaningful absence, and there will be a question mark over whether it returns at its peak today.
