Hypotenus

Neil Mulholland, who trains out of Limpley Stoke in Wiltshire, has had a strong season with 60 winners from his yard, and he knows exactly what kind of horse Hypotenus is. Early on, Mulholland identified him as a horse with genuine pace — one who travels so easily that he can get too keen for his own good on wet, muddy ground, and that two miles is about as far as he wants in those conditions. He also prefers to race right-handed. These are the fine margins that define a horse at this level.

His two wins tell a neat story. The first came at Gowran Park in Ireland in September 2023, on heavy, testing ground — his rivals simply couldn't live with a good gallop. The second came at Taunton in January 2026, and Mulholland's words afterwards were revealing. A previous race at Ludlow had left Hypotenus physically battered and, seemingly, mentally rattled. He is not a horse who enjoys a rough, scrappy contest — he needs space and his own rhythm. The fact that he bounced back and won carrying a big weight said something real about his ability when things fall right for him.

Since that Taunton win, though, he has gone six races without winning, with a string of third and fourth-place finishes. His most recent run was just yesterday. At Class 3 level — one step below the top tier of British racing — he has not managed a win from five attempts. His regular jockey Taylor Fisher has ridden him eight times for that single win, a rate of roughly 1 in every 8. None of this makes Hypotenus a failure; it makes him a horse operating right at the edge of his ability, on the right days capable of beating decent rivals, on the wrong ones finishing just out of reach of the places that matter. That, for many racing fans, is precisely what keeps them watching.
