Being placed six times in a career tells you the horse is competitive enough to be in the mix, but the inability to convert is the persistent story here.

That is a notably better return than its overall record suggests, and it points to a horse that wants to be up close to the pace, travelling fast, rather than grinding out a longer test. Keep it sharp and short is the message.

Huscal competes at Class 4, which sits in the middle of the racing ladder — not the glamour events, but not the bottom rung either. Winning 2 from 6 at that level (again, 1 in 3) is a solid record, and it confirms this is a horse that belongs at that tier rather than one being gently eased down through the grades. The trainer is Charles Hills, operating out of Lambourn in Berkshire, a yard that has sent out 31 winners already this season — so there is no shortage of know-how behind the horse. Huscal raced just yesterday and remains very much in training, meaning another attempt at ending that 20-month drought is never far away.
