The most interesting part of his profile is what the numbers reveal when you break them down. Over longer trips of two miles and beyond, Houndsworth has won 1 from 6 races — that 17% win rate, or roughly 1 in every 6 attempts, is meaningfully better than his overall record suggests. In other words, the further they go, the more he comes alive. His record at shorter distances is considerably flatter, so there is a clear pattern for anyone paying attention.

His recent form makes for uncomfortable reading — two finishes in the bottom half of the field before that Cork win, then straight back to sixth and seventh in his two most recent outings. That up-and-down sequence suggests a horse who can find the gear occasionally but cannot yet do it consistently. He raced just yesterday, so he is clearly being kept busy.

Houndsworth is trained by Mark Michael McNiff, who operates out of Strandhill in Co. Sligo. It is a small yard that has sent out five winners this season, so McNiff knows how to get a horse ready to win — the challenge now is finding the right opportunities for a horse whose best form comes at distance and who has yet to win in Class 4 company, having been held scoreless in three attempts at that level. Cork in April showed what he can do on a good day. The question is whether there are more of those days to come.
