The recent form makes for interesting reading. A second place sits at the end of the sequence, and since then she has posted a third, a fourth, and two fifths — a horse that keeps showing up near the finish without quite delivering. That pattern of near-misses is either a sign that a breakthrough is coming, or that she finds a way to get beaten. At this stage, only another race will tell us which.
What works in Holly Mist's favour is who is doing the saddling. Roger Varian's Newmarket yard is one of the most respected operations in British racing, and 87 winners in a single season is a serious number — that is not a yard stumbling along, that is a well-oiled machine. When a trainer of that calibre keeps running a horse, it usually means they see something worth persisting with. Varian does not waste time or entries. The fact that Holly Mist raced just one day ago suggests she is fit, healthy, and firmly in her trainer's plans right now.
The 0 from 7 record is not alarming on its own. Plenty of horses take time to win, and consistent placing at least shows she is not out of her depth. The next few races will be telling — if the places start drying up, the picture changes. But for now, Holly Mist looks like a horse on the radar of a very good yard, waiting for the right day to finally go one better.
