Hierarchy

The turning point came years ago. Trainer Jamie Osborne's yard, based at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire, had genuine hopes for Hierarchy once upon a time. He had won twice at six furlongs and even finished second by a head in the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes—a top-tier race for younger horses. Those early victories came on normal ground, and that remains his sweet spot; on such conditions he wins roughly 1 in every 7 races. But when Hierarchy was stepped up to Group 1 company at the Commonwealth Cup, the fast, dry ground proved too much, and he has never recaptured that level since. Now he operates almost exclusively in Class 5, where the competition is far less demanding but the wins are harder to come by than they once seemed.

Jockey Saffie Osborne has ridden Hierarchy 29 times and won four races from those mounts—a 14 per cent win rate together, marginally better than his overall 8 per cent. Their partnership at least suggests some understanding, but neither driver nor horse can change the fundamental fact: Hierarchy has hit a ceiling. With 5 wins from 59 races over his career, he is a horse that pays his way occasionally but mostly provides decent minor placings. He was active within the last day, still competing, but the long drought since February suggests the racing gods have moved on.
