Heartened

The most encouraging sign in the data is what happens when Heartened gets a proper distance to work with. Over a mile and three or four furlongs — a trip that demands stamina as much as speed — the record reads one win from seven races, which works out at winning roughly 1 in every 7 at that trip. That's 14%, well above the overall career figure of 5%, which is closer to 1 in every 20. In short, get the distance right and this horse becomes a genuinely different proposition.

Cam Hardie is the regular partner in the saddle, and the two have built up quite a record together — 13 races, which is a real working partnership. The win rate of 8% between them (1 from 13, so roughly 1 in every 13 attempts) isn't spectacular, but it reflects the level at which Heartened operates rather than any particular failing. That level is Class 6, the entry-level tier of British racing, where Heartened has managed 1 win from 12 races. Trainer Ollie Pears, based at Norton in North Yorkshire, has sent out 11 winners this season, so the yard clearly knows how to find the right race for the right horse.

The recent form makes for sobering reading: finishing 5th, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 4th, and 6th across the last six outings, with no win since that Newcastle success nine months ago. A third-place finish is in there, a reminder that better days are possible, but the overall trend is of a horse searching for its moment. With Heartened having raced just one day ago, that search is very much ongoing.
