Harswell Ruby

Trained by Roger Fell at his yard in Nawton, North Yorkshire, Harswell Ruby competes mostly at Class 5 level, which is the bread-and-butter end of British racing — competitive enough that winning is never a given, but not the rarefied air of the sport's biggest occasions. At that level she has won just 1 from 13 attempts, which tells you the victories have had to be earned. Fell's yard has been in good form this season, sending out 23 winners, so there is clearly ability in the team to place a horse when the moment is right.

That sense of timing matters when you look at Harswell Ruby's two wins. The first came at Doncaster in April 2025, and the second — more recently — at Thirsk on 10 April 2026, just seven weeks ago. Thirsk is a tidy, fair track in North Yorkshire, and the win there came over a mile and one or two furlongs, a distance that appears to suit her best. At that trip — between a mile and one furlong and a mile and two — she has won 1 from 6 races, a win rate of roughly 1 in 6. That might not sound spectacular, but compared to her overall record it represents the sweet spot: get the distance right, and she becomes a different proposition.

Her recent form reads 6-4-5-1-7-10 — that win sitting in the middle of a sequence that has since tailed off. She raced just yesterday, which means she is very much in active training and still being tested. Regular partner Rowan Scott has yet to get her head in front across six rides together, though placing her consistently suggests the partnership understands what she offers. Harswell Ruby may never be a horse who has crowds on their feet, but she is consistent, durable, and — every so often — she gets it exactly right.
