The real key to Great Blasket is ground conditions. On normal, standard ground he wins half his races—6 wins from 12 starts. Put him on anything else, and that rate collapses. He clearly has a surface preference and a trainer, James Owen at Newmarket, who knows how to place him where he'll perform. Owen's yard has sent out 205 winners this season, so there's real skill in that setup.
Recent form shows some scatter—he was third two races ago but hasn't quite had the consistency of his earlier career—but with a win just days ago, Great Blasket is clearly still active and able to find his way into the winner's circle when conditions suit. At his age and level, a horse that can still deliver wins at a specialist course like Nottingham, provided the ground plays its part, remains useful. He won't be beating top-class opposition, but for the yard who understand his preferences, he knows his job.
