Jonathan England, his regular rider, has partnered him eight times for a single success, which suggests the partnership works sometimes but lacks consistency. His recent form before the break — a fourth place sandwiched between five sixth-place finishes — indicates he was struggling to find the winner's circle and may have needed the rest.

If Grand Scheme is to make an impact on his return, he needs to find races on normal ground over a proper distance where the competition suits him. He has shown he can win, but not regularly enough to be relied upon. The long lay-off is a gamble, and at seven years old he is hardly a young prospect. Still, he carries the training credentials of a busy yard and the experience of a horse who knows what racing is about. Whether that experience counts as an advantage or a liability is the gamble Sam England is taking by bringing him back.
